Situated 12 kms north of the small industrial city of Siauliai ( which is pronounced ass “shoo-lay”) is the Lithuanian national pilgrimage center. Standing on a small hill are several hundreds of thousands of crosses that stand for Christian devotion and a commemoration to Lithuanian national identity. The beginning of the first crosses is not known, but in spite of repeated attempts by the occupying communists in the twentieth century to demolish that hill and clean these crosses, they are still present in thousands. You'll be able to see a panoramic picture of the hill here. While the theme is not shivery in itself, the scene of a hill with mystical crosses appearing is a bit agitating.
